Kesey is a young, talented novelist who has just seen his first book, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest , published, and who is consequently on the receiving end of a great deal of fame and fortune. The acid test parties began after Kesey’s experience with mind-altering drugs as a volunteer test subject for Army experiments in 1960 (later revealed to be part of the CIA’s mind control experiment, Project MKUltra). The trip, immortalised in Tom Wolfe's book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, would become the mythologised starting point of the psychedelic 60s.
