Allen Ginsberg and Bob Dylan at Jack Kerouac’s grave-site. We’ve featured this legendary encounter before. But, in the context of the new Martin Scorsese Dylan movie, we figured to feature it again. The two, on the Rolling Thunder tour, stopping off at Lowell’s Edson cemetery.

The second, we’re thrilled to be able to present to you today – Jack Kerouac’s “Mexico City Blues”– readings from this seminal text, recorded live at The Knitting Factory, New York, December 4, 1988, by Allen, Carl Solomon, Judith Malina, Bob Rosenthal, Steven Taylor, Simon Pettet, Richard Hell, and many many more, (with improvised live musical accompaniment provided by Mark Silent 16mm film of Beat writers Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, as well as Lucien Carr and his wife Francesca and their three sons, Simon, Caleb and Ethan, Irwin Allen Ginsberg was an American poet and one of the leading figures of both the Beat Generation of the 1950s and the counterculture that soon would follow. He vigorously opposed militarism, economic materialism and sexual repression and was known as embodying various aspects of this counterculture, such as his views on drugs, hostility to bureaucracy and openness to Eastern religions. Allen Ginsberg's Howl (1956), William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch (1959), and Jack Kerouac's On the Road (1957) are among the best known examples of Beat literature. Both Howl and Naked Lunch were the focus of obscenity trials that ultimately helped to liberalize publishing in the United States.

In 1974, the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics was opened in his honor by Allen Ginsberg and Anne Waldman at Naropa University, a private Buddhist university in Boulder, Colorado. The school offers a BA in Writing and Literature, MFAs in Writing & Poetics and Creative Writing, and a summer writing program.
